Abstract:

Collection contains a letter from James McCowan Preston to his sister, Nov. 16, 1861 (6 p.); a letter from Mary E. Porter to Robert J. Preston, Oct. 3, 1864 (3 p.); photographs of the Preston house; and information about the Preston family and Preston Point, Tomales Bay by Tom A. Bither, Jr. written in 1989. James M. Preston letter from Preston Point describes his overland journey by stage coach through Salt Lake City, Carson City, and Placerville. At Placerville he continued by train to meet the steamer Antelope at the Sacramento River, and from there to San Francisco. He describes meeting up with his father (Robert J.) in San Francisco, and with him going to Preston Point via Petaluma. He writes in detail of the point, their house, and operation of the home, and their father's store-keeping business. Letter from Mary Porter to Robert J. Preston mainly relates to their recently married children, and refers to their life in California far from her home of Versailles, Ky. Preston Family information by Tom Bither gives genealogical information, a history of Preston Point and vicinity, and describes a visit he made to the old home site there. Photos of the house were taken on this 1985 visit.
